Social, political, economic, financial and climatic hiccups around the world are pointers to Christians to wake up; be at their duty post and engage in active, meaningful evangelism.
Evangelism is the urgent need of the hour because the future has arrived. Predictions of the Bible are no longer objects of debates or arguments because they are happening before our eyes. The world is perplexed and in dire need for solutions to the myriads of problems confronting it. Economies of many nations have defied all known economic theories and laws. Economic distress is ravaging the nations of the world as a sign of the end as predicted in the scriptures: For there shall be… famines and pestilence… and upon the earth distress of nations (Luke 21:11, 25).
The depletion of ozone layer and increasing heat waves with severe radiation is a cause for concern among the leaders of many developed and developing nations. During the 1992 Earth Summit dubbed the largest global gathering over climatic changes, Severn Suzuki, a 12-year old girl while addressing leaders at the Earth Summit declared: “I am afraid to go out in the sun because I don’t know what chemicals are in it… if you don’t know how to fix it, please don’t break it”.
moon and in the stars and on the earth distress of nations with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectations of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken (Luke 21:25, 26). The mass hysteria globally reported in Punta Arenas, Chiles Southernmost city where parents now keep their children indoors between 10a.m and 3p.m is a typical example of the fulfillment of the expression: “the hearts of men failing them”. In New Zealand, children now wear hats and eat their lunch under the shade of trees. Philippines is in the news for the massive havoc brought upon the nation by a rampaging, destructive typhoon which is now heading to the South eastern China. Sea. America is still counting her losses in the wake of storm Sandra which hit the country and littered the entire landscape with damaged infrastructures and many dead. Computer micro biochip is gradually being introduced. Kevin Warwick, Professor of Cybernetics, at the University of Readings in the United Kingdom recently received a biochip (as tiny as a grain of rice) in his arm that enabled doors to open, turn on-off lights. It will soon be archaic to carry drivers’ license, passports, ID’s, credit cards for identification because all bills, shopping and making all transactions will be through this technology. All buying and selling will simply be done through waving your hand and letting the
And there will be signs in the sun, in the device detect the biochip. Don’t forget that nobody will be able to sell or buy without the mark of the beast!
In view of these global events, what should be our individual and collective attitude as Christians to those outside Christ? There is a need for a new orientation in the body of Christ. Our value system will no longer be on the same page with that of the world. The world must hear the Word in its undiluted forms. Let the truth be told.
Entertainment gospel is evil.
Christ seems to have been marginalized in our vain attempt to re-empower the church. Pastors are now trained to be some combination of CEO and psychotherapist. Today, a “successful” pastor is one who is a good generator of programmes, a good fund raiser and one skilled at public relations and modern communications. Success is determined by sheer numbers and by making people feel good about themselves. Cheap grace is propagated as if God no longer frowns at unrighteousness. Cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without repentance. Cheap grace is grace without discipleship; grace without Jesus Christ. If Christians sincerely and truly believe that people without Jesus Christ are lost eternally, what should be our disposition towards the urgency of evangelism? The most benevolent humanitarian activity on the surface of the earth is preaching the gospel. It is the personal responsibility and privilege of each individual Christian to proclaim the liberty that is in Christ. This is not the time to live out the teaching of our Saviour poorly. The world is still watching and waiting for the earnest manifestation of sons and daughters of God. The world may not bother to read the Bible and find out what the signs of the present age signify. We are the epistles they are reading. And may our individual and collective lives not be the reason why the world will not embrace Christ. Time is running out. You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned?… you are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden (Matthew 5:13-14). Brighten the corner where you are. Don’t forget you will appear before God alone to give account of your stewardship.
There is no group appearance before the Almighty. Those in the early church loved the Lord with all their hearts. Those in the present church love with their mouths. If you love the Lord with your heart, begin today to evangelize. Speak out for Christ wherever you find yourself. There is an eternal reward awaiting you.
